Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta Series

The Helly Hansen National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta Series — the largest national sailboat racing circuit in the United States — returns to St. Petersburg, Fla., for the first stop of its 30th anniversary season Feb. 16-18. The event is organized by Sailing World and hosted by St. Petersburg Yacht Club.

The annual three-day event features one-design racing, where teams compete in races against identical boats. Points are accumulated based on finishing position in each race, and the team with the fewest total points at the conclusion of the regatta wins its class.

For competitors in the regatta’s one handicap class (PHRF), time allowances are used to score a boats of varying sizes and designs.

Every year, hundreds of local, regional and national sailors register to compete in the Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta St. Petersburg, vying for top marks in one of more than 10 classes and a chance at the Overall Winner title, which earns the winning team a berth at the Helly Hansen Caribbean NOOD Championship Regatta, hosted by Sunsail in the British Virgin Islands Oct. 21-26.

Helly Hansen—a global leader in technical sailing apparel with more than 135 years of experience protecting professionals on the water—continues as title sponsor for the elite sailing series for the fourth consecutive year. As part of Helly Hansen’s commitment to the sport, the company will also continue to sponsor a team of local teens as the Helly Hansen Junior Crew at each stop in 2018.

Operating since 1988, Sailing World’s National Offshore One Design Regattas, known as the “NOODs,” are the longest-running and most popular sailboat racing series in North America. Every NOOD regatta attracts regional, national and international talent to compete against the local community on their home waters.

Other 2018 sponsors include North Sails, Mount Gay Rum and Sunsail.

What a find! Local weather and ocean info from NANOOS and UW

We came across this weather and ocean data website recently and were truly surprised we hadn’t found it sooner.

Created in collaboration between the University of Washington and the Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing Systems (NANOOS), which is the regional association of the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS), the site includes NOAA nautical charts, near real-time weather and sea conditions; wind, current, wave and weather forecasts; surface currents from HF radar; tide forecasts and water level plots; and marina information and satellite images.

That’s a lot of great info!

Introducing Echo Spot: What’s new?

The Amazon Alexa dominated last year’s superyacht technology with big brands such as Crestron partnering with Amazon to allow voice control of music, lights, temperature and more on board.

Now, Amazon has announced the UK launch of its touchscreen Echo Spot device. Showcased at CES, this advancement on Alexa includes a 2.5-inch touchscreen Smart Display and a built-in camera. The display means that users can now ask Alexa to show them the weather rather than simply hear it, to display who is at the front door when linked to a camera there, and many other cool features.

The £119.99 device also doubles up as a ‘smart alarm’, and is already available in the US. However, with privacy always a big concern on yachts, some owners may feel that having this camera on board – not least in their bedroom as an alarm – is a step too far. In the past, Amazon devices have been reported to activate when they’re not wanted, opening up questions about whether the Echo Spot could turn into a potential spy, and whether cyber-criminals would be able to hack into this information.

What do you think? Let us know in the comment section below.

Clipper Race

Youngest ever Clipper Race skipper claims first race win

Visit Seattle, led by 24-year-old British sailor Nikki Henderson, the youngest ever Skipper to lead a team in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race’s eleven editions, has held off a strong challenge from three other teams to chalk up a thrilling maiden victory in Race 6: The Wondrous Whitsundays Race.

During one of the most challenging stages so far in the Clipper 2017-18 Race, Visit Seattle crossed the finish line off the coast of Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays, Australia, at 15:05:36 local time (05:05:36UTC), completing the 1,600-nautical mile sprint up the east coast of Australia from Hobart in eleven days.

Arriving into Abell Point Marina where the Clipper Race fleet will be berthed, Skipper Nikki said: “It’s such a good feeling. I’m finally a bit more relaxed than the last 48 hours. It’s been exhausting!

“This race has been really, really tough in so many ways. So many different types of conditions and sail changes. The tactics have been really hard but we pushed all the way through. The crew loved the Southerly Busters, it was exciting. We had experience of similar conditions in the past and we’re used to that kind of thing. The crew handled it really well.”

This is the team’s second podium result after finishing second in Race 4, from Fremantle, Western Australia, to Sydney, and it was made to work hard for this victory. This morning saw the team off the coast of Mackay, just five nautical miles ahead of the second placed PSP Logistics. Sanya Serenity Coast, skippered by Australian Wendy Tuck, was only another mile astern, with just seven nautical miles separating Visit Seattle from the fourth placed Liverpool 2018.

In the end, just 25 minutes separated Visit Seattle from second placed PSP Logistics, which takes its third podium result of the Clipper 2017-18 Race.

Round the world crew member Marek Omilian, from Seattle, says: “It was a phenomenal race. Phenomenal. Quite long because of the heat but it was very good sailing and a well-deserved victory. We were quite prepared for the weather because we faced some similar conditions in Leg 1 to Punta del Este and we were also very well prepared with Nikki’s leadership.”

Praising his Skipper, Marek adds: “Nikki is a very charismatic young leader. She loves teaching and she’s trained us very well.”

Race 6 presented some of the most varied and dramatic conditions of any Clipper Race stage so far. A tough upwind slog from Tasmania and up the southeast coast of Australia, it included two Southerly Buster storms which bought spectacular lightning storms and gusts of up to 78 knots off the Queensland coast.

Liverpool 2018 claimed third place, its first podium result of the Clipper Race. The team was actually fourth across the line after leading for the most of the last four days but its overall position was boosted after Sanya Serenity Coast was given a six-hour time penalty by the Clipper Race Committee for breaching exclusion zone rules, as per Race 6 Course Instructions.

The eleven Clipper Race yachts, along with their crew and supporters, will be based at Abell Point Marina, the first global 5 Gold Anchor accredited Marina in the world, during its stay in the Whitsundays. The stopover will be one to remember, with the crew to be welcomed by the inaugural Whitsundays Clipper Race Carnival – a two-weeklong celebration of events and activities showcasing the beauty of the Whitsundays.

Tourism Whitsundays Sales and Marketing Manager Tash Wheeler, who was down on the pontoons to greet the teams into Airlie Beach, said: “It is absolutely fantastic to see a female skipper win the inaugural Wondrous Whitsundays Race and for one so young to pull off this feat is incredible.”

“What better place to win your first race than the beautiful Whitsundays! We are very excited to be showcasing the region to the Clipper Race crews, their families and friends, and hope they can take in as much as possible while here, including world famous Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, and of course the Great Barrier Reef, including the iconic Heart Reef, visible only from the air and only in the Whitsundays.

“The Whitsundays Clipper Race Carnival will show the world that not only are we a world-class sailing destination but also a world-class holiday destination.”

At the time of writing, five Clipper Race teams are now alongside in Airlie Beach, with the remaining teams due in by approximately lunch time tomorrow local time in Australia.

The Airlie Beach, Whitsundays, stopover marks the changeover port which completes the All-Australian Leg 4, and starts the Asia Pacific Leg 5. Distance wise, this stopover is also the approximate half way stage of the Clipper 2017-18 Race with 20,000nm of the 40,000nm, 13 stage course now completed.

Race 7, which will see the teams head approximately 4,200 nautical miles to Sanya, the first of two Chinese stopovers in this next leg, starts on 29 January. From there, teams will head to Qingdao, China; across the mighty Pacific Ocean to Seattle; Panama; and New York; before heading back across the Atlantic to Derry-Londonderry. The Clipper 2017-18 Race finishes on July 28, 2018.

‘Visit Seattle’ wins Race 6 in the Clipper Round the World

Huge congrats to team ‘Visit Seattle’ on a hard fought win in Race 6: The Wondrous Whitsundays Race during the Clipper Round the World. Here’s the report on their victory courtesy of ClipperRoundtheWorld.com:

After one of the most challenging races so far in the Clipper 2017-18 Race, Visit Seattle has held off a strong challenge from three other teams to chalk up a thrilling maiden victory in Race 6: The Wondrous Whitsundays Race.

Skippered by 24-year-old Brit Nikki Henderson, Visit Seattle crossed the finish line off the coast of Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays at 15:05:36 local time (05:05:36UTC), completing the 1,600-nautical mile sprint up the east coast of Australia from Hobart in eleven days.

Arriving into Abell Point Marina, where the Clipper Race fleet will be berthed in the Whitsundays, Skipper Nikki said: “It’s such a good feeling. I’m finally a bit more relaxed than I have been during the last 48 hours.

The Visit Seattle team had to work hard for the win. The eleventh and final morning at sea saw Visit Seattle off the coast of Mackay and just 5 nautical miles ahead of the second placed PSP LogisticsSanya Serenity Coastwas only another mile astern, with just 7 nautical miles separating Visit Seattle from the fourth placed Liverpool 2018.

Round the world crew member Marek Omilian says: “It was phenomenal race. Phenomenal. Quite long because of the heat but it was very good sailing and a well-deserved victory. Praising his Skipper, Marek adds: “Nikki is a very charismatic young leader. She loves teaching and she’s trained us very well.”

From the start, Race 6: The Wondrous Whitsundays Race seemed destined to go well for Visit Seattle. The team was second across the start line in Hobart, and closely tailed the leading Sanya Serenity Coast as the fleet headed up the Derwent River.

Despite the tough upwind slog from Tasmania, and up the southeast coast of Australia, followed by the arrival of the infamous Southerly Buster in the waters off Queensland, Visit Seattle worked its way into first place by day 5 and remained in the top four for the remainder of the race.

The win caps off what has been a brilliant All-Australian Leg 4 for Visit Seattle. The team achieved its first podium after finishing a close second behind Sanya Serenity Coast in the opening race from Fremantle to Sydney. Visit Seattle also picked up Scoring Gate bonus points for a third time after being second through the gate in Race 6.

Everything you need to know about the Suhaili 50 Falmouth Parade of Sail

Salish Sea Pilot rebuilds and redesigns for 2018

Our favorite cruising guides for the Pacific Northwest just got a makeover. Check out what’s new with the Salish Sea Pilot…

Reworking our Salish Sea Pilot guides has been a delightful obsession since the summer.

Overhauling our Salish Sea Pilot cruising guides in time for the boat show season has been a wild ride. We have worked some crazy long hours, not only making the usual updates to marina and anchorage coverage, but also redesigning and rewiring the five editions.

Everything has taken a backseat to this. Our blogging fell off a cliff. Cruising suffered. In-laws ate alone.

Why the change? Cruisers who use our guides have been very kind with us, and helpful in the extreme, but every once in a while someone will note that perhaps the pages didn’t fit their laptop the same way they fit their tablet or phone. Or they sometimes got confused or had difficulty moving around when using a page that had two, sometimes three, anchorages.

Chartlet from Salish Sea Pilot’s Cruising Guide to the Gulf Islands. Not to be used for navigation.

So we shifted the orientation of our pages to landscape, so not only would they better present on tablets and big-screen phones, they would also better fit laptop screens which so many cruisers use for navigation.

Slow Boat to Greece ~ OCA 2018

Cruise Sardinia, Corsica and Elba and then sail in the wake Odysseus from Sicily to Ithaca. Explore lost civilizations, hike old footpaths, be stunned by the natural fireworks of one of Europe’s most active volcanoes and learn how to make olive oil. These are just a few of the surprises that await modern-day seafarers propelled by the winds of antiquity who sail the Mediterranean Sea.

After three years of planning, Bill Eisenhauer and Gabriela Hirt took their two kids out of school, rented the house in Victoria and set off on a 15-month journey from Sardinia to Greece onboard their 12-metre ketch Hippodackl IV.

Along the way they rediscovered what it means to live in the moment while immersing themselves in ancient history, bustling harbours and dramatic nature.

Richardson to Smith Island with June Burn, 1930

Richardson store and oil dock, 1958. Original photo from the archives of the Saltwater People Historical Society©

“Off to Smith Island with Capt. John Thompson of the little boat JEAN G. Down the slender strips of gravel between rail fences, the island lying trim and narrow north and south, the sea and its islands falling away to the east and west. Down into the cup of the island past Hummel Lake, glittering in the sun, the sun on grass, on plowed fields.

The tide is out so that when we reach the dock at Richardson we must climb down spikes driven into a piling and so onto the deck of the Jean G.

The captain takes aboard supplies for the radio and lighthouse tenders on Smith Island. In a few minutes, we are chugging southward towards the isolated dot lying off Whidbey Island, Island County.

On our starboard bow Woody Island (called Buck Island on my map) with its ‘Chateau’ built to hug and straddle and fit the snags of a big gray rock. As we leave the scant protection of Woody and Long Islands to go rolling and plunging into the great swells of Fuca the captain lashes down his tender, his freight and whatever is loose on deck. There is a wind from the southwest to augment the swells so that we do considerable rolling and wallowing, now on top of the long hummock of a wave, now in the cradle between two such peripatetic ridges.

Volvo OR

Following one of the longest and most painful doldrums crossings in memory, the Volvo Ocean Race fleet is now in the northeast trade winds and speeding towards the finish line in Hong Kong, some 2,700 nautical miles to the northwest.

The fleet finds itself in three distinct groupings, with Dongfeng Race Team leading team AkzoNobel and Vestas 11th Hour Racing in the northernmost triumvirate. And it’s in the north where the stronger winds should be as the northeasterly trades winds get established.

“I think we are in a strong position,” said Dongfeng Race Team skipper Charles Caudrelier. “We have just left the doldrums and we should be the first ones to catch the trade winds… we hope.

“We are very close on the ranking with Scallywag but we prefer our position for the future.”

While that northern option may turn out to be the correct one, at the moment, it’s David Witt’s Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag who are stealing a march on the opposition.

Contrary to many weather routing predictions, Witt and his crew have managed to craftily cut the corner, turning west before the rest of the fleet and gaining valuable miles towards the finish.

“The weather has helped us for sure,” Witt said. “It’s a balance between making decisions based on what the weather files tell you and what you can see in front of you…

“Anything can happen, it’s a pretty volatile situation still, but I’m pretty sure this group of people can deal with whatever happens.”

The Scallywags make up the middle grouping on their own, with MAPFRE leading Turn the Tide on Plastic and Team Brunel in the final triad, some 150 nautical miles directly east (and further from the finish line) compared to Scallywag.

For the trailing group, it’s been 24 hours of immense frustration. One final cloud in the doldrums grabbed these three and wouldn’t let go, while the other four were speeding away.

“We thought we’d be fighting at the front and now we’re fighting at the back which is not where we wanted to be,” said Dee Caffari, the skipper of Turn the Tide on Plastic. “Really disappointed. But we have nearly 3000 miles left to make it up.”

Icom IC-M330GE

The clever engineering department at Icom have done it again and produced one of the smallest fixed VHF/DSC radios in the market.

The IC-M330GE’s front face is so compact that it matches the size of a modern Smartphone. Despite its size, the IC-M330GE has all the hallmarks of Icom’s stylish design, ease of use and performance.

The compact IC-M330GE measures only 156.5 (W) × 66.5 (H) ×110.1 (D) mm making it ideal for a cockpit where space is limited. The IC-M330GE features the same common user interface that has been adopted on the latest Icom radios including intuitive “soft-keys” permitting faster access to radio functions.

The IC-M330GE and microphone are waterproof to IPX7 and can withstand submersion in up to a 1 metre depth of water for 30 minutes. The set features an AquaQuake draining function. If water gets into the speaker grill and muffles the speaker’s audio, the AquaQuake draining function emits a buzzing sound which sheds water from the speaker system, assuring you sharp, clear communications even in the worst conditions.

A newly designed speaker delivers distortion-free clear audio even at full volume. It provides dynamic and clear audio over a wide bass and treble range. The IC-M330GE’s receiver provides reliable communication in an RF busy environment like a marina (Selectivity and IMD: more than 70 dB).

The IC-M330GE includes an integral GPS Receiver which will also allow your current position and time to be used for DSC calls. The external GPS antenna allows for straightforward fitting so for an open top powerboat or at the chart table in a yacht; installation has never been so simple.

The IC-M330GE will be available from Icom stockists from mid January with a suggested retail price of £255.00 (inc.VAT).

For further information about this new model, visit the IC-M330GE VHF/DSC Marine Transceiver Product Page.

Deadline looming for NMTA Grow Boating Grant applications

Every year the Northwest Marine Trade Association (NMTA) hands out funds to local organizations that are working to get more people on the water in the Pacific Northwest.

The grants are awarded through the NMTA’s Grow Boating program, whose mission is to increase the number of boaters and encourage current boaters to boat more often. Since 2003, the organization has spent more than $1.5 M to promote boating in the PNW through various events, sponsorships and programs. The NMTA will award multiple grants up to $20,000 by mid-April 2018. But the deadline to turn in your organization’s application is coming up on February 5.

Interested organizations can apply online at: http://ift.tt/2mrqahm

“Our efforts and programs have reached more than a million people since 2003. We’re very pleased to be able to continue supporting non-profit groups who share our mission of getting more people out on the water or introduced to the joys of boating into our 15th year,” said Mark Yuasa, NMTA’s director of Grow Boating.

For those wanting obtaining funds, applications must fall into one the following categories:

Youth Boating Grant: Awarded to a group or organization seeking funding support for an event or program aimed specifically at getting or increasing youth participation in boating activities.

Discover Boating Grant: Awarded to a group or organization seeking funding support for an event or program aimed specifically at introducing new people to boating.

Boater Education / Safety Grant: Awarded to a group or organization seeking funding support for an event or program aimed specifically at educating new or current boaters on how to be safe on the water.

For questions, contact Mark Yuasa at NMTA: mark@nmta.net  or 206-634-0911.

About NMTA’s Grow Boating Program

The NMTA established a separate program called Grow Boating in 2003 to promote the benefits and lifestyle of boating in the region. The program’s mission is to increase the number of boaters and encourage current boaters to boat more often through the development of new programs, events and promotions. NMTA’s Grow Boating program is funded by a portion of space rental fees collected by the association at its Seattle Boat Show each January.

In addition to the available grants, NMTA Grow Boating funds a promotional campaign called the Northwest Salmon Derby Series – partnering with 15 derbies around the region to promote and increase participation in those fishing events. The NMTA’s Grow Boating program also offers sailboat rides at popular regional sailing events and sponsors a number of regional boating events.

Four Great Things to do in Sorrento

Sorrento is one of Italy’s hidden gems. It is a little off the beaten track, so has not turned into a tourist trap like some other destinations have. This town has managed to retain much of its unique character while still catering very well for those visitors who take the time to travel there.

As you will see, there is plenty to do and see in Sorrento. Here are just a few of our favorites.

Go to the opera

Sorrento opera tickets are not expensive, but not that many performances are held, each year. Therefore, if you want to enjoy opera while staying Sorrento you will need to plan ahead and make sure that you book your stay for when there are operas being held. The venue is the Museo Correale di Terranova. It is an intimate space, which makes the experience all the more special and memorable. The fact that the show is a mix of arias and Italian songs means it is ideal even for those who are not serious opera fans. Most people will recognize many of the songs.

Enjoy some fine arts

For centuries the Correale family collected fine art and donated many of the best of them to the Correale di Terranova Museum. If you like 17th and 18th-century painting you will be overwhelmed by the exhibits at this museum. They also have a nice collection of European porcelains and Murano glass. You will also be able to enjoy the beautiful gardens.

Visit Villa Fiorentino

In the gardens of this villa, which is located not far from Sorrento, is a very interesting archaeological museum. There you can enjoy displays of sculpture, decorative arts, day to day items and many other types of artifacts. You can find out more about this fascinating place and plan your visit by clicking this link.

Enjoy the beautiful religious buildings

If you like architecture you will be very impressed by Sorrento. Building work on the cathedral started in the early 15th century and continued right through to the early 20th century. The base of the bell tower dates back even further to the 12th century.

There is a lot to see in this cathedral including beautiful wood marquetry, so it is well worth a visit. You can see even more examples of this beautiful craft by visiting the Museo-Bottega della Tarsia Lignea.

The Basilica of Sant’Antonino dates back even further to the 11th century. Over the centuries this building was reformed many times. At times, elements of other buildings were incorporated into it, including some stunning Roman columns. If you have not got long to visit the basilica, head to the crypt. There you can see examples of art produced by local people as offerings. Also, take the time to see the whalebones. They are an unusual feature and the story of why they are there is an interesting one.

It is also worth visiting the Cloister of San Francesco. Again, over time this building was modified and features from other buildings incorporated into it. For example, the three columns that were originally part of a pagan temple.

You can visit Sorrento any time of the year, but it can be a bit quiet in the winter. As a result, most people visit between April and September.

Micro LEDs & yacht-friendly drones: What we saw at CES

lang: en_US

LG’s first 4K UHD projector

This first offering from LG’s new HU80K series claims to be half the size of competing 4K projectors while being easier on the wallet and maintaining image quality. This 4K UHD projector can create a 150-inch screen at 2,500 lumens, making this the company’s brightest projector. Its webOS 3.5 smart TV interface can access the most popular online streaming services offering 4K content. It also supports HDR content (HDR 10) for an enhanced cinematic experience on the yacht.

However, any interested parties should know that despite being LG’s brightest projector to date it is still not suitable for use out on the deck unless conditions are pitch black.

Samsung’s “The Wall” Modular TV

Samsung’s new giant TV, titled ‘The Wall’, features a micro-LED display and was on show at CES at 146 inches. Micro-LED technology is claimed to be an advance on OLED, offering both deep blacks and bright highlights.

But what is most interesting about this TV is not its size, it’s the ability to customise this size and shape to whatever an owner may desire. This is because the display is composed of many smaller modules that can be arranged to suit any space – ideal for yachts where space is always at a premium.

Yahama’s FAZER R Helicopter

This unmanned helicopter for highly precise spraying is intended for industrial use, but we imagine it could be used for superyacht maintenance in the not so distant future.

The company claims that the FAZER R improves upon all existing unmanned helicopter technology with its “Turn Assistance” feature. This should mean improved controllability and spraying performance by turning to maintain fixed spacing for spraying, holding evenly spaced flying paths, and maintaining flying speed.

This function aims to improve spraying accuracy without relying on the operator’s flying skill.

QYSEA Technology’s LTDFIFISH P3

QYSEA Technology’s LTDFIFISH P3 drone can capture 4K HD Footage and 20-Megapixel photos underwater, livestreaming back to the controller so moments can be witnessed in real time. Its 4000 Lumens LED lights – with 8 adjustable levels of brightness – ensure that the user can capture good detail even in dark or unclear ocean conditions.

FIFISH is reported to have a HDMI output, meaning it could be integrated into yacht distribution system for live viewing on a large TV, this ROV operates at up to 100m. What’s more, perfect for the new generation of yacht owners, the FIFISH app allow you to instantly share your footage to all social media platforms such as Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, WeChat in one click.

The restoration of Flying Eagle and a new homeport on Orcas Island

On May 1, 2015, Flying Eagle arrived in Anacortes  after being trucked on a flat bed from the East Coast.  Rick and Diane Strollo purchased F.E. in Rockport, Maine,  in 2014 where she’d been owned and partially restored by Artisan Boatworks in Rockport, Maine.

After a season in service, it was evident that F.E.’s hull needed more attention. Artisan Boatworks had replaced the forefoot and some planking forward  but along the keel and at the turn of the bilge aft, water was leaking in at an unsafe rate.  Emerald Marine Carpentry would continue the restoration. The boat’s original oak ribs where past their usefulness; many where broken at the turn and split at the heels. The boat had been re-framed with sisters once before but the stainless deck screws that had been used as fastenings had corroded away, leaving the planks adrift.  The oak floor timbers that tie the hull to the keel were rotten and cut away in places. Fortunately, the keel itself was in good condition.
