Since we had an extra day with the Thanksgiving holiday, we decided to cruise out to Franklin Lock and Dam this past weekend. We’ve made this trip several times in the past and usually it’s once cooler weather arrives. We love visiting here because it is a different landscape from the beaches we frequent all summer and also because of the unique spot the boat slips are located. With only 8 slips that have electric and water, the boating camp area is usually not too crowded. Typically there is only 1-2 other boats while we are there and that makes it nice to have the peninsula with gazebo and fire pit pretty much to ourselves. It’s also a great area for kids not only because we build camp fires at night but also because there is plenty of room to run and play or ride bikes. This year, we brought Corey’s friend Sam along so he would have someone to hang out with.

Our cruise there was a slow one (at one point we were going 4 knots) but we eventually made good time. We locked through without any issues and docked Blue Turtle before happy hour. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Gordon and Caleb from s/v Ariel with whom we met the previous year here. They helped us tie up and we made plans to catch up over the camp fire that evening.

The next morning the boys roamed the camp ground and then took the dinghy out for a spin. Meanwhile, Randy and I did a little organizing and cleaning out our onboard dock boxes while we awaited the arrival of Randy’s dad, Johnny and his wife April. They drove down from Punta Gorda to visit and stay the night that evening. After lunch, we sat out under the large oak tree and enjoyed the amazing weather we had. As newbie RV’ers, Johnny and April walked around the camp ground checking out the various RVs and chatting with the campers.

As we were enjoying happy hour cocktails the boys decided to go for a dinghy ride up the river. Randy had warned them that the dinghy tank was running low on fuel and that we had more to replace it but they seemed to think they would be ok. As the sun began to set and dusk began, Randy started getting a little nervous that that the boys hadn’t returned. With Johnny tending the grill on land and I prepping some veggies for dinner in the galley, Randy made the executive decision to fire up Blue Turtle and head out to locate the boys. Gordon hopped aboard to assist and I continued to cook under generator power. We headed up the river just as it was getting dark and we spotted the dinghy on plane headed toward us and then it died. The boys seemed pretty happy that we had come to rescue them and it turned out that their issue wasn’t necessarily being low on fuel. Their issue with the dinghy was that the fuel line was connected all the way and the vent was closed. This was what had delayed them from getting back to camp before dark. Gordon helped to hook up the dinghy to Blue Turtle and we towed them back to camp. It made for great camp fire stories later that evening while we roasted marshmallows for s’more’s.

Sunday morning after breakfast, it was time to say goodbye to April and Johnny and head home on Blue Turtle. Corey pulled us out of the slip and navigated toward the lock. Once the lock master gave us the go ahead, Corey pulled into the lock while Randy and Sam handled the lines. Gordan and Caleb managed to slip into the lock behind us on Ariel. Once we locked through Captain Randy took the helm and headed down the river toward home.

Electric String’s new Director of Business Development is a very busy woman. Since joining the global AV design and installation experts less than a month ago, Jill Phillips’ role in supporting new business development opportunities, extending existing partnerships, and contributing to the company’s growth strategy has seen her crossing borders worldwide to meet customers and suppliers and investigate exciting new technologies. But exactly what has she been up to, and who did she see along the way? We bring you a sneak peek of Jill’s diary, so you can see exactly what it takes to drive business at a leading audio-visual company.
When? 27th-30th September
Where? Port Hercules (and beyond!), Monte Carlo
Even before her appointment was officially announced, Jill accompanied Managing Director James Ward and Commercial Director Rob Sullivan to MYS2017. During four days of intensive meetings and networking events (with some down time of course in La Rascasse & Stars ‘n’ Bars to name a few) she met clients, shipyards & partners to discuss current and future projects.
But Jill didn’t just restrict herself to the hustle and bustle of the main show areas… indeed, she witnessed the unveiling of several exclusive launches. After all, who wants to let a little thing like not actually having started a job yet get in the way of discovering the latest technological advances? Jill said: “My main role was to get the Electric String name out there. Changing people’s perception. However, as a team we witnessed some great tech…. Crestron always have a great stand. That and Omniyon’s Yacht Cloud 4K movie system were our highlights at MYS.”
And what were the main things clients were looking for? “It might sound like a cliché, but other than an interest in seeing the latest tech, when it comes down to it everyone wants the same thing: a reliable system at a decent price,” she explained.

Less than a month later Jill was jetting off again, this time to take part in the Pinmar Charity Golf Tournament! A highlight of the superyacht industry’s social calendar every year, Pinmar Golf 2017 saw 320 amateur golfers competing in 80 teams to raise money for a variety of causes, joined by 1999 British Open Champion Paul Lawrie & Sky Sports News own Kirsty Gallacher.
On joining the company, it was thought that Jill would use her strong network of contacts and vast experience in both the audio-visual and marine industries to help take Electric String to the next level of success. Of course, there is no better place to build on contacts than such a must-attend industry event and a Golf one at that.
Jill said: “I knew we wouldn’t win (that’s next year) – I’m no Tiger Woods – but it’s all about the taking part! I was delighted to be able to represent Electric String , and to help raise lots of money for all the brilliant charities.” She was also there to meet with people from all different sections of the industry, including their team partners Superyacht Supplies and CST Luxury. Jill & the team at Electric String donated a Meridian Audio System comprising of DSP3200 Loudspeakers and Audio Core 200 pre-amplifier to the Pinmar Raffle.

Where? Fort Lauderdale, Florida
After just enough time to re-acclimatise to the cold English weather, Jill set out to Florida to attend the 58th annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS). There to see more clients, suppliers and network, she also managed to visit the exhibits of a range of yacht builders and designers, with the aim of expanding the company’s AV knowledge and staying one step ahead of the game.
“Here I was really just introducing Electric String to the US market, as many of the Americans were not aware of us. This was a really good show as I found the Americans to be very open – I even bumped into a few owners just by chance and managed to discuss AV needs with them,” said Jill.

Apartheid Museum museum is huge, attractive and also extremely dense. This is a must see Museum for all to learn about South Africa’s past. They have a special exhibition honoring a Nelson Mandela right now. This is such an important part of South African history so everyone should visit. It’s a very informative walk through the museum. Johannesburg attracts great displays and a lot of details which were frighteningly accurate.
The park is close to the city and you can get easily there. Johannesburg Attractive place for the rides and there are a few places that sell nice food. It’s good for the family for a day out. Try to go when there are not so many people visiting the park it makes your trip easier. The restaurants offer great variety in terms of food and prices. The casino is world class.
The Botanical Gardens, which include the popular Emmarentia Dam, are among the city’s loveliest and botanically diverse public spaces. Popular with joggers and picnickers, the gardens also provide the perfect photographic backdrop for photography lovers. The gardens are open to the public from sunrise to sunset and entrance is free. Johannesburg Attractive Botanical Gardens is a lovely place to walk through, cycle or run or just find a quiet place to sit.
Satyagraha House is the most attractive place in Johannesburg, and great visit here to see Gandhi’s place here in Johannesburg. Gandhi spent quite some time in South Africa. This house contains many of Gandhi’s sayings, pictures, stories, and the furnishings he used. It also serves as a guest house. You can actually stay there in certain designated rooms. Beautifully maintained under the management of Edna Oberholzer, this place is worth to visit.
Constitution Hill attracts most places in Johannesburg. In prison, there is well-known freedom fighter you can capture, which are Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. In the design, there are more references to search the history of this place and the future role it wants to play within the South African legal system. The women’s prison is a must see. Constitution Hill is a must see place in Johannesburg.
South Western is the biggest black community peoples in the world and its disparities are extremely interesting, especially if you are not from an underdeveloped country. You can see the many layers of the population in one single 20-minute tour. The local peoples are happy for you to take attractive photos but only in the area, the local South African guide will show you.
This South African National Museum of Military History is a hidden treasure near the Johannesburg Zoo. It’s most attractive Great museum in Johannesburg, well-maintained and well preserved. It’s a great way to spend at the very least a half a day. If you love the military and air force, this would be the place to go. It shares the history of a South African country, World War and actual aircrafts and military tanks from way back in time.
