R2AK announces a new Puget Sound event for 2018

As always, the folks at the Race to Alaska and Northwest Maritime Center (NWMC) are once again keeping fans, competitors and potential competitors on their toes for the 2018 event. Or should we say, events.

The big announcement on Wednesday was the addition of a new race from Tacoma to Port Townsend, which will end just days before the start of the R2AK.

The basic premise of the race is — just like the R2AK — dead simple: 70 miles. 48 hours. No motors. No support. No wind.

Of course, the “no sails” bit is a bit of a wrinkle, but it also levels the playing field into a totally human powered race. “That’s right. HUMAN POWER ONLY. Pedal, paddle, or row. We don’t care.” The official website says.

The only other stipulations are two checkpoints along the way: One will be a boat floating just off Owens Beach at Pt. Defiance, likely to force competitors up Colvos Passage. And a second at the Port Townsend Canal.

What spawned the concept for the event by theNWMC team was the desire to bring the R2AK sense of daring and challenge to Puget Sound. “R2AK is more about personal challenge and triumph than winning a race,” remarks R2AK co-founder Daniel Evans, “it’s about finding the limits of what you think you are capable of and pushing beyond them all. And that’s what SEVENTY48 is about, but more of a two-day powerlift where finishing requires everything you have.”

SEVENTY48 gets underway from the head of Tacoma’s Thea Foss Waterway near the Museum of Glass on Monday, June 11 at 5:30 p.m., and teams have 30 minutes to cross the start line. It ends 48 hours later in Port Townsend.

The application deadline is April 15, and the fees are: 50 bucks to register, 50 bucks to rent a tracker (mandatory), and
100 bucks into the kitty for the winner take all prize. (And you’ll have to pony up a refundable $200 deposit for the SPOT tracker.)

Get your team and boat together and sign up!
