Gear Review: Surface Pro 4 is a great boat computer

I’m always on the look out for a compact, well performing, easy to use computer for the sailboat. Over the years, I’ve used some rugged tablets, laptops, and other creations, but none have been able to run the software I need while still being easy enough to use. I have been a hardcore Mac user for the last 6 years, and while my MacBook Pros have been great, the best software for navigation doesn’t run natively on the Mac without major compromises.

Windows vs. Mac

The primary use of a computer aboard Grace while planning or underway is to run Coastal Explorer. Secondarily, when doing projects or maintenance, to run software from manufacturers like Maretron or MasterVolt to update or configure various devices. All of those software packages require Windows.

For blogging, editing photos or videos, or general web browsing, I still rely on my Mac, although those waters are becoming a bit more muddied with the recent purchase of a MacBook Pro with Touch Bar – I can’t say I’m impressed with the hardware compared to what I see in the PC world.

Shanty – HEY!

Our awesome almost complete “Ben-built” shanty!!

“What the heck do you guys do in the winter up there in Wisconsin???”

We are asked this a lot. For those that know me, understand that I LOVE winter and all things snow and cold. This was not how I felt growing up, but since Ben and I have been dating he has introduced me to the wonderful world of skiing, snowmobiling and best of all ice fishing! With the proper gear, cold weather is tolerable and actually enjoyable and I couldn’t be any happier that we have decided to spend our winters (for the time being) in the cold north.

So, here is what we have been up to, or actually what Ben has been up to! Building our very own ice shanty/shack! I am still amazed at the talent Ben has in all things that need to be built or repaired. He even added a woodburning stove to keep us nice and toasty!

The shanty is still in the build stage but soon we will be hauling this out on the ice of Green Bay, in the hopes of slaying the fish. Not only will we be eating fresh water fish but we will be spending quality time together while enjoying the beautiful outdoors. I can not wait to get out there and catch the monster walleye, perch, whitefish and the prized burbot!! Wish us luck and I will make sure to post our catch!!!

COSTA’S 580 LENSES

Costa Del Mar’s 580 lens technology offers yachtsmen a new perspective on the world.

An infinite stretch of aquamarine appeared before my eyes as my sweet ride, a Viking 52 Convertible, cruised toward Resorts World Bimini. Midday sunlight pierced the shallows and drop-offs, offering countless variations of the trance-inducing color scheme.

I took in the gorgeous scenery through a test pair of Costa Del Mar’s Rafael frames fit with 580 green mirror lenses. They filter out harsh yellow and ultraviolet blue light, which the manufacturer says will create clear definition and accurate color.

Costa’s 580 lenses come in a variety of lens colors, including sunrise, copper, silver, gray, green and blue.

I’ll tell you: They work. The Bahamian blues and greens popped vividly.

And the Rafael’s nylon frame keeps them lightweight. I found myself searching for them, only to discover they were atop my head.

This was my first experience wearing a pair Costa 580s in the field. But after Bimini, I can say for certain it won’t be my last.

Making the Leap to Liveaboards: Hopes and Fears

In about a month, we’re making the leap to become liveaboards at Shilshole. We haven’t decided for how long, but will re-evaluate at one year – it’ll come down to how well we survive the difficult winter months when it’s rainy, cold and dark every day.

There are some big reasons making it worth trying the liveaboard lifestyle, and an equal number of fears / worries we have about it. It’s not right for everyone, but everyone we talk to who has made the jump to being liveaboards loves it and recommends it.

To me “liveaboard” means living on a boat while being tethered to one home port most of the time – either because you have to work a job on land, or perhaps you’re retired but just don’t want to go anywhere. Although last summer we lived on the boat for 3 months, that was cruising – which is living aboard while traveling, an entirely different matter.

Moving aboard involves lots of full carloads – to both the boat and storage

The benefits to liveaboard life are clear:

Palm Trees, Ocean Breeze.

We have finally made it to paradise! 🌴  The locks, the murky Mississippi River and my AT&T internet service are all things of the past!  We’re docked in Bimini at The Hilton Resort.  The marina is chic, the sun is shinning, the breeze is warm.   Life doesn’t suck. 😎

Our friend, Shawn, jumped on board earlier in the week while we were in Ft. Lauderdale.  The week in Lauderdale was mostly uneventful in the realm of blog worthy content. Errands (lots of stocking up on our favorite U.S. staples – protein bars, my vitamin stash, beauty products, soda water, etc.)  and routine maintenance to the boat (oil change, windshield wiper repair, washing and waxing).

On Friday morning the weather/wind was ideal for our short jump to Bimini.  We watched the inauguration while we were underway and before we knew it, the turquoise water was upon us.   Margaritas/vino/snacks subsequently ensued and then we started scheming for our Saturday afternoon activities.

The first official day in the in the Bahamas looked like this:

Blogging next from Nassau.  Fingers crossed for more wildlife encounters. (Except for sharks, of course.) 😬 🐬

Rum running through the islands

Rum Running Through the Islands Recalled by Harry W. Patton

“Joe Patton was not a rumrunner, or a bootlegger. For a loss of exact descriptive words, I would describe him as a ‘fringe facilitator.’ He never did drive a rum boat in the dark of night, nor load or off load any booze.

Soon after WW I ended, the use of alcoholic beverages increased markedly. On payday a large number of workers would shoot their paychecks on booze before they even got home. People felt that something should be done. Backed by many church groups, the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), a national amendment, the 18th Amendment was finally passed and was put into effect in 1920, prohibiting the distillation, importing or consumption of alcoholic beverages. This was the beginning of what is called the Prohibition period (1920-1933.)

Many men were extremely put out about this situation and started to find ways around it. Some made gin in bathtubs that got to be known as ‘bathtub gin.’ Others brewed beer in huge vats in hidden warehouses. But those vats were often found and destroyed by the Feds. Some other source had to be determined.

Canada was free from our Amendment 18. Many of our entrepreneurs quickly fell upon the idea of importing whiskey from Canada and soon midnight clandestine smugglers arrived with cases of whiskey at the border into the US. The border between the US and Canada is more than 3,000 miles long, most of it unpatrolled. Even so, the Feds, due to tips and payoffs, were able to intercept many of the transfers and much booze was apprehended and destroyed.

Beaufort South Carolina (Byoo-fert)

GOODBYE GEORGIA Hello South Carolina

Leaving Savanah, Georgia, it wasn’t long and we crossed into South Carolina. Heading toward Beaufort SC. (Pronounced Byoo-fert as in Beaufitul) later we will pass Beaufort NC (pronounced Boh-fert as in BOW).

Visiting state number 12 on our list of states visited.

Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee ,Alabama, Missouri, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina missing one, Hmm will check our log book.

Is this the end of the salt marshes?   Miles with barely a bird, and the mud smell at low tide is distinct.    We expected to see more wildlife, but considering the brackish water, it is not appealing to many animals other than dolphins or the occasional alligator (we didn’t see any alligators)

We meet the occasional Shrimping boat- they have a lot of rigging.  It would be interesting to know more about this industry.  Our only knowledge  came from watching the Forest Gump Movie!

MOORING BALL AT BEAUFORT SOUTH CAROLINA

Beaufort is a historical town- the ‘historic district’ is within blocks of the marina.  The city marina is on the Beaufort river just before the  Ladies Island swing bridge.

ANTEBELLUM HOUSES

What is an Antebellum house you ask?  Inquiring minds want to know, Wikipedia has the answer.   Ante means before; Bellum means war.    So we are looking at prewar homes- in this case neoclassical style architecture built before the Civil War.   The Antebellum era or Plantation Era is between 1800 to 1850.

The stately mansions line the streets of Beaufort.  Some are renovated, others in disrepair.  You may find a Bed and Breakfast, or private homes.    Once designated as a Historical home, they are regulated for renovations, and upkeep.    Colors, original character and materials may all be subject to approval if you choose to live in a “historical home”.

CEMETERY

It may seem odd to see photos of cemetery’s-  The southern cities and churches take great pride in the history of the cemetery.   The wrought iron gates, brick paths ,and welcome signs invite you in to pay respects to those who passed.
