Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race

A fleet of 56 yachts set off from Sydney Harbour this afternoon as the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) started the 32nd Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race in what initially light conditions.

Promoted as the great winter escape, the Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race is second only in status to the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race among long ocean races conducted by the CYCA.

The 384-nautical mile race, which starts from Sydney Harbour and finishes off Main Beach on the Queensland Gold Coast, was first conducted in 1986. The CYCA works with Southport Yacht Club as the race finishing partner.

The first boat to arrive at the finish line will be recognised for taking line honours but the overall race winner will be established through the internationally recognised handicap system IRC. The 56 boats in the race will compete across eleven divisions including line honours.

Speaking on the commencement of the 2017 race, CYCA Commodore, John Markos, said:

Offshore racing is never for the faint of heart and our competitors will face tough challenges out there. Good seamanship, tactics and teamwork will see the best boat victorious and we look forward to congratulating the worthy winner of this challenging race, on the Gold Coast.”

The Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race is a prestigious race in its own right, but adding to its status is that it is the opening event of the CYCA’s ocean racing season for the Blue Water Pointscore. The closing event within this series is the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

EU roaming charges scrapped: What it really means

From the 15th June, the new EU roaming regulations came into force, leading to the end of all roaming charges whilst travelling in the EU. However, despite the charges being dropped, there are certain key points that phone users may have not noticed that could still mean an unanticipated fee.

 

Unexpected bills

Although the new regulations now state that every customer will be charged the same rates for usage as they would in their home country, you could still find yourself with a surprise charge at the end of the month. For example, if a member of crew was based in the UK off-season but needed to make a call, perhaps to a future employer in France, they could still be charged the traditional usage rates on some tariffs. 

Furthermore, the updated law does not affect the high rates that can be charged for calls made from EU countries to non-European countries. Imagine that same person has now begun their season in France but wished to call a family member in AustraliaThey would still be charged the standard rates that their network provided, which although vary massively can be as high as £2.15 per minute for U.K. networks . All this means our crew member may well be facing a large pay-out at the end of the month, and one which they probably hadn’t even considered.

Changing consumer expectations to be met

With the regulation changes setting the tone for cheaper roaming prices, superyacht crew are understandably demanding more than ever from their phone contracts. Crew want tariffs to be completely flexible to match their everchanging lifestyles; to allow them to pick and choose what coverage they will want and when they will want it. So, data providers must make sure they are catering for this or risk losing businessOne way to achieve this is by offering shorter term contracts, such as those on a 30-day rolling basis that can be cancelled or re-activated as and when required. Whether the service is purchased yacht-wide or for an individual, this suits the seasonal and sometimes unpredictable life of those in the superyacht industry.

Transparency is also highly valued amongst customers, with the EU roaming charge abolition elevating doubts about the fairness of hidden charges or catches from phone companies. Now in mid-season crew are very busy, and so it is particularly important that understanding their phone bill doesn’t take up much time. To avoid surprise fees, some swap SIM cards between countries, however this again is time consuming and often means constantly changing numbers. Therefore, companies offering the opportunity to stick with the same phone number for a fixed fee provide for these crew expectations. This means they can spend as little of their precious free time as possible dealing with personal admin, whilst continuing to pay a ‘fair’ price.

Avoiding massive pay-outs

There are options for those who want to ensure they never get unexpected charges, after being lulled into what can be false sense of security by headline figures and statements. Companies like RoamingExpert offer bespoke packages which allow crew to pay low costs for reliable tariff plans, meaning it is much easier for them to keep track of their expenses. For example, RoamingExpert tariff offers calls to any non-European country from Europe for 30p per minute (inc. VAT), whereas other networks could charge up to £2.15 a minute (inc. VAT). 

With a range of exclusive mobile plans available to consumers, all elements of roaming can now be made hassle free and affordable – something which is obviously crucial for people whose careers revolve around travelling the world. Though EU roaming charge abolition has gone some way to helping, crew now look to data providers to offer more trustworthy and flexible options for using their mobile phones.

3D printing will drastically change the superyacht industry

Rotterdam Additive Manufacturing Laboratory (RAMLAB), the port of Rotterdam’s 3D-Printing lab, is developing the first ship propeller made using 3D-Printing technology. The joint effort includes partners Damen Shipyards, Promarin, Autodesk and Bureau Veritas. RAMLAB was set up to carry out R&D into how wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) technology could become commercially viable in shipyards. Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, has been used to make small plastic propellers in the past, but the building of this ship propeller marks the beginning of real opportunity for building larger scale products for superyachts. The RAMLAB team believe 3D printing will drastically change the industry.

This comes after Naval architect Greg Marshall’s presentation at the 2017 Superyacht Design Symposium earlier this month, where he put forward the benefits of printing full yachts in the future. Marshall said “Additive manufacturing is changing the playing field. In the very near future, we will be using it to build superior yachts that have significant material reductions and much smaller carbon footprints. He pointed out that whilst currently shipyards see about 15 to 20 percent of raw material wasted, 3D printing wastes more like 2 percent, meaning a saving of material as well as labour.

Marshall predicts that as the technology develops, eventually we will find that complete 45m yachts can be printed in 90 days, a great reduction on the current two to three years build time. Marshall said: “We picture by 2030 we’ll probably be fairly close to 3D printing full-scale metal structures on boats and interiors will come after that.”

Southbound from Nootka Sound and a stowaway in Tofino

A couple days ago as we approached Nootka Sound, sailing close hauled, I remarked “it’s all downwind after this!” That evening, a southerly moved in bringing rain and south winds just as it was time for us to head back south. The fun downwind sail I had envisioned evaporated into a long upwind slog. But, no matter – we ended up having some fun, challenging ocean sailing, even though it ended up a tiring day.

The south wind was only 9-12 kts, but the waves were much larger than you’d have in those conditions on a sound. Exiting Nootka, we were motoring with wind and swell on the nose, only making 5 knots when we’d normally do 6, and rolling from -10 degrees to +10 degrees. There was a 3 foot westerly swell with SW wind waves mixed in. We decided to sail, even though going upwind around Estevan Point would take a really long time. But setting sail actually made things much more comfortable – we were no longer rolling 20 degrees.

It took us nearly 4 hours to get around Estevan though, 8 hours overall from Friendly Cove to Hot Springs Cove. The swells approaching Estevan were really large, and if only 10-12 knots does that, I’d hate to be caught out there in 20.

Locks and more locks- this is a grueling day on the water.  9 miles,   5 locks by 3 pm

We got separated from our buddy boat as multiple boats vying for positions going into the locks.

We did the big lock  then pulled over to take pictures as Southern Cross approached.

As the locks get so routine, I found a photo of each sign would help us place where we were that day!

By the end of the day, we still had not got together, with the lock walls filling up, SC stopped at a wall that was open, and we were at the next wall a few miles further up.

The lock walls are filling up early, we called ahead and the next two walls for full, so decided to stop . We woke to fog and hoped it wouldn’t delay our friends from catching up!

Next morning SC came through about 10 am, we got good photos, then shoved off and continued together toward the next locks.

Stopped early again to make sure we had a spot on the wall.  90 cents a foot, no electric or water.

From the Galley: Salmon Salad with Lemon-Dill Dressing

Porter and I with a nice coho.

There are no two ways about it, we love salmon. Catching it, eating it, we love this tasty gift from the sea.

Fortunately, thanks to generous Alaskan fisherman who took a liking to our boys, plus catching our own, we’ve been up to our ears in fresh salmon lately. So much so that we’ve been trying hard to find different recipes and ways of preparing it than we ever have.

To move away from our tried and true salmon dishes, we turned to our favorite cookbooks we have aboard: San Juan Classics and San Juan Classics II by Dawn Ashbach and Janice Veal. We made the following recipe on a “hot” summer day here in Alaska and it was perfectly enjoyed in the cockpit with a glass of chilled rosé (boxed, of course). How’s that for fancy!

Salmon Salad with Lemon-Dill Dressing

This was delicious!!

Ingredients:

Lemon-Dill Dressing (see below)

6 ounces shell shaped-shaped pasta (we used strozzapreti)

1 cup frozen peas

2 cups cooked salmon, broken into chunks

3/4 cup chopped celery

1/2 green pepper, diced

1/4 cup chopped green onion

1/3 cup sliced green olives with pimiento

2 hard cooked eggs, sliced

Salt and pepper, to taste

Lettuce (we didn’t use this)

Lemon wedges

Directions:

  1. Prepare Lemon-Dill Dressing and set aside.
  2. In a large pot, cook pasta al dente, according to package directions. Drain, return to pot and toss with Lemon-Dill Dressing; set aside.
  3. Place peas in colander and rinse with warm water until peas separate. Drain and pour over pasta. Add next 6 ingredients. Toss gently, salt and pepper to taste. Cover and chill for at least 3 hours.
  4. To serve, line 4 plates with crisp greens, spoon on salmon and garnish with lemon wedges.

Lemon-Dill Dressing

3/4 cup mayonnaise

1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

2 teaspoons Dijon mustard

1 teaspoon dried dill weed

Salt and pepper, to taste

Combine ingredients in a small bowl and stir.

Flyship, the company realizing near-weightless hovering directly over land or water, is now about to take orders and start series production in Germany for a new superyacht tender with a difference. This is after its successful proof and concept, building and testing of a large number of Prototypes.

The company claims that the unmatched advantage of its technology is flying in close-ground proximity, but being classified as a ship. Based on the guidelines of the IMO (International Maritime Organization), and the MSC, (Maritime Safety Committee), the Flyship is regarded as a ship and operates between 120 km and 800 km distance, able to transport up to 100 passengers at speeds exceeding 250 km/hour over water from shore to shore.

Flyship claims it can travel up to ten times faster than other boats of its size

This means that building and operating Flyship’s tenders comes at the typical cost of a fast ship, whilst travel times are reduced to that of an average twin engine aircraft, and comfort and spaciousness is greatly improved. Indeed, Flyship claims that its product moves ten times faster than the average vessel of its size whilst using half the fuel.

The company’s FS-100 has all-over measurements of L38xW40.5xH10m. It provides a 14×8 m full standing height cabin space with an unobstructed cabin sole. Seats of any design can be fitted in order to create an ultra- luxurious accommodation for Executive, VIP and Business Class. XXL size fully electrical reclining seats, comfortable sofas and tables, majlis, bathroom and galley according to the highest superyacht yacht standards are some possible options. It should be noted that achieving the 100-passenger maximum is less likely with the VIP cabin layout, with only the FS-100 standard cabin layout allowing for 100 seats. However, the vessels are highly customisable to meet client requests.

The Phasor ESA has broad functionality that far exceeds any traditional, mechanically steered VSAT system available on the market today. These outstanding features include instantaneous beam switching, extremely fast scan rates (>200 degrees/second), and single or dual beam illumination per aperture which enables connectivity to two satellites from a single ESA at the same time.

The Phasor maritime terminal can be either flat or conformal to the ship superstructure (and is still only 2” high). It can be a single/contiguous system or distributed “logical” array made up of multiple independent ESAs acting as a single system in BOTH transmit and receive modes.

The software-defined beam forming allows for dynamic control, tapering, and adjacent satellite interference mitigation.

The Phasor antenna system has been designed to be “future proof”, able to work interoperably with any satellite constellation in the same frequency band, and BETWEEN different kinds of satellite constellations (Geosynchronous/High Throughput Satellites [GEO], and Low Earth Orbit [LEO] networks) giving unprecedented coverage and unrivalled flexibility to network operators and ship-owners alike.

The Phasor ESA system is backed by major satellite operators such as Intelsat and leading maritime network service operators such as OmniAccess. Northwest Maritime Center working to gain stewardship of Point Hudson

When the following email from the Northwest Maritime Center’s Jake Beattie hit my inbox (and many others), I have to say, I was surprised. Surprised, but not overly stunned. This is big news for Port Townsend and boaters around the Salish Sea…

There’s no way of getting around the bigness of this news so I’ll just say it: as you read this, the Northwest Maritime Center is working to secure the long-term stewardship and management of Point Hudson—birthplace and current home of the Wooden Boat Festival and the 14 acres adjacent to the NWMC. Our intention is to pursue a long-term master lease for the marina, the historic buildings, and the undeveloped land—I said it was big!

Why? The future of Point Hudson is uncertain. It operates in the red, the breakwater is failing and needs $6 million to repair. With low reserves and high debt levels, the Port of Port Townsend is up against a financial wall, and is in the middle of considering a swath of options that runs from not repairing the breakwater and letting it fail, to changing the use of the land to allow for more development—relaxing zoning laws, historic protections, etc.

Our goal: We think we have a plan to keep Point Hudson the way it is but better, and to help it realize its potential by making it a better version of itself both financially and programmatically.

There’s a lot more than that, but here are a couple of things to get you started:

  • My remarks at last Saturday’s Navigator Brunch, where we unveiled this plan to the community.

We couldn’t quite put our finger on exactly what, but this news seems to fit perfectly.

Video: The Sea Bear explores the Salish Sea

Sailing The Sea Bear is a new YouTube travel show featuring Captain Shawn and cameraman Phil. Both are veterans of the US Armed Forces, one a retired US Navy EOD technician and the other a US Army Infantryman. The Sea Bear, a sloop rigged 1985 C&C Landfall 39 is their home and dream maker as they voyage north up the Pacific Coast from San Fransisco to explore the Columbia River, Salish Sea and Inside Passage to Alaska.

Their goal is to capture and share a part of what makes coastal living unique — so ride along as they celebrate life, food and adventure onboard Sailing The Sea Bear.

We’ve completed the Great Loop: Lovesick Lock to Penetang Ontario – July 26, 2017

Jul 24th – It was a cold rainy day with moderate to high winds.  My brother-in-law called to tell us that my Mom passed away this morning … very sad news.  The funeral is planned for Friday thus we need to get home quickly so we can drive up north to support my dad and the rest of our family.  We left Lovesick lock this morning and travelled 60 miles through 7 locks to Bolsover lock.  We have 5 more locks to go before we get to Lake Simcoe and another 4 locks to get to Georgian Bay.  We figure that we should be at Hindson’s marina by Wed afternoon at the latest.
Jul 25th – It was a warm sunny day with moderate winds.  We left Bolsover lock this morning and travelled 62 miles through the Trent Severn including a Lake Simcoe crossing and pulled into the blue line of the Port Severn lock.  All the lock masters worked hard to get us through the locks as quick as possible so we can get back for my Mom’s funeral.  We crossed our wake today as we entered the narrows between Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching thus we are now officially “Gold Loopers”!  It’s hard to believe that we completed the Loop … it doesn’t feel like we’ve been away for more than 1 year.  Tomorrow will be our last leg from the Port Severn lock to Hindson’s marina in Penetang.  
Jul 26th – It was a warm cloudy day with some scattered showers and moderate winds.  We left the Port Severn lock this morning and travelled 15 miles to Hindson Marina and pulled into our new slip marking the close of our Great Loop voyage.  Neither Maria or I can believe that our dream trip has come to an end!  Dave and Sue, Gold Looper friends of ours from Manana, met us at our slip and helped us load up the car so we could make a quick dash home for my Mom’s funeral.  Here are some interesting facts that I collected during our trip:  Our loop lasted 391 days, we travelled 6,788 miles, we spent $13,700 on fuel (2,100 gallons of fuel), we put 770 hours on our engines, $9,700 on marinas (158 nights on anchor, 16 nights on a mooring ball, 176 nights at marinas and 40 nights at free docks), our repairs amounted to $6,500 and in total we spent $51,000 for our Great Loop trip.  Note that all the dollar amounts are a mix of both Canadian and US funds.  I might scare myself if I converted all the US costs to Canadian!  We collected 145 boat cards and met many other boaters that did not have them … It was a very social trip.  I have many other statistics however I don’t want to bore you with details.  We really enjoyed the trip and if you ask us if we’d do it again our answer would be “Yes”, however not for a few years.  Thanks for following our blog and it’s time to say Goodbye, Farewell, ….  Over and Out.

Hold on … we can’t say goodbye yet … we haven’t put up a picture with us and our Gold Looper flag … Hopefully we can get to this sometime after the family matters we need to deal with.  Stay tuned for our final post sometime in the future!
