VQ54 VANQUISH YACHTS

Two hulls of the VQ54 are now under construction at Vanquish Yachts.

Vanquish Yachts in the Netherlands has started construction on two hulls of its VQ54.

The model is an evolution of the VQ48 and is intended to be a personal yacht as well as an oversized tender for a superyacht. One of the first owners plans to use the VQ54 as “the ultimate party boat for Ibiza,” in Spain’s Balearic Isles, according to the builder.

The Vanquish VQ54 has MAN i6-800 diesel engines and a top speed of more than 45 knots. She also has a tender garage for a Williams 285 Turbojet, giving superyacht owners a powerful dayboat as well as a “boat-within-a-boat” stowage solution.

About the VQ54’s interior: It has a two-person berth, a head and a galley for cooking meals during day cruises.

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie

Heavy rain and flooding is expected as Ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie moves south-east. A Flood Watch has been issued for coastal catchments between Gladstone in Queensland and Bellingen in northern New South Wales.

The Flood Watch extends inland to parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central West, Maranoa and Warrego, Darling Downs and Granite Belt forecast districts, as well as the far northern New South Wales ranges.

Significant rain has been recorded around the Mackay area over the past 48 hours, with over 1000mm at Mount William and Clarke Range in the Pioneer River Catchment – the average for the whole year is 1500-2500mm. Thunderstorms have produced falls up to 150mm within two hours around Mackay, and the Bureau has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the region. Further warnings are expected throughout the day.

Further 24 hour rainfall totals from 9am Tuesday 28 March to 9am Wednesday 29 March:

• Clarke Range: 646mm (Pioneer River basin)
• Mount William 568mm (Pioneer River basin)
• Undercliff: 544mm (Fitzroy River basin)
• Upper Finch Hatton: 396mm (Pioneer River basin)
• Eungella 221mm: (Pioneer River basin)

Queensland Weather Services Manager, Richard Wardle says further fallout is expected from the system. ‘We’ve seen some extraordinary rainfall totals around the Central Coast. It’s important for people to also realise there’s potential for damaging wind gusts up to 120 km/h. The strongest gust recorded was 263 km/h at Hamilton Island yesterday – that’s the strongest wind gust ever recorded here in Queensland’.

New South Wales Weather Services Manager, Jane Golding says, “This system is expected to impact the far northern NSW coast and adjacent ranges on Thursday and Friday, with very heavy rainfall and high winds that have the potential to cause riverine and flash flooding, bring trees down and cause property damage. A Flood Watch has been issued for numerous northeastern NSW rivers. A Severe Weather Warning has been issued for rain and wind.”

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie is expected to continue tracking in a south-easterly direction during Thursday, bringing further heavy rain and potentially damaging winds. The system will then likely move into the Southern Coral Sea on Friday but is not expected to redevelop into a Tropical Cyclone, however, winds and waves are likely to increase over the south east coastal district.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and the NSW State Emergency Service are urging the public to stay tuned for the latest official forecasts and warnings from the Bureau, and follow the advice of local emergency services. Avoid travel, if possible. Remember: if it’s flooded, forget it.

America’s Cup Superyacht Program

The 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda will feature the fastest yachts in the 166 year history of the competition for the oldest trophy in international sport.

The sailors racing those yachts, known as America’s Cup Class (ACC) yachts, are supreme athletes, comparable to NFL linebackers or Olympic sprinters in terms of power output and athletic ability, and the crystal clear, turquoise waters of Bermuda provide the perfect stage on which to run the greatest race on water.

However, the 35th America’s Cup is not just about racing on Bermuda’s waters. The events are also going to play host to one of the greatest gatherings of superyachts in history. These incredible boats, beautiful to look at and awe-inspiring in size and impact, will add to the sheer spectacle of the America’s Cup, as well as adding yet more numbers to the thousands of people travelling to Bermuda to witness what many experts are already saying could be the greatest America’s Cup yet.

Superyachts are a very important part of the America’s Cup and, reflecting the high value of their role in the events that will take place in Bermuda in May and June, a dedicated America’s Cup Superyacht Program was created by the America’s Cup Event Authority (ACEA), in conjunction with BWA Yachting. BWA Yachting played a central role in the America’s Cup Superyacht Program at the 34th America’s Cup in San Francisco in 2013. Their knowledge, expertise, and the trust the superyacht community has in BWA Yachting made them the perfect partners for the America’s Cup Superyacht Program in Bermuda in 2017.

The America’s Cup Superyacht Program was assisted hugely by special legislation passed by the Bermuda Government for the 35th America’s Cup enticing superyachts to come to Bermuda. Brand new superyacht marinas have also been built at the heart of the America’s Cup Village at Royal Naval Dockyard and at Front Street in Hamilton, the capital city. Together with marketing support from the Bermuda Tourism Authority, these initiatives have enabled Bermuda to engage the global superyacht community and really put Bermuda on the map for superyachts.

The original America’s Cup Superyacht Program had 39 berths allocated for superyachts coming into Bermuda from all over the world. Due to overwhelming demand, that number was extended to 50 berths and the total allocation is now very close to being sold out, with just one berth left for a megayacht and an extensive waiting list of superyachts ready to join the action should spare berths become available.

The America’s Cup Superyacht Program is not just about beautiful yachts watching the action. It also incorporates racing with the America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta, being run from 13 – 15 June in conjunction with Boat International. 19 superyachts are already entered, including Adela, the 55 metre superyacht which won the 2013 America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta, and a long list of enquiries is being assessed for additional entries.

Last, but clearly by no means least (and for some, the ultimate expression of America’s Cup history), is the America’s Cup J Class Regatta. This will take place on 16, 19 and 20 June and will feature some of the most iconic boats in the history of the America’s Cup, with eight of the nine existing J Class boats committed to participating in three days of racing scheduled around the first weekend of the America’s Cup Match presented by Louis Vuitton.

For superyacht owners, the 35th America’s Cup is a must-stop destination in 2017. Australian National Championship

After four days of racing and a mix of conditions, Team Beau Geste came out on top of the Australian National Championship. It was an honor to sail with Karl Kwok and his team.

I have known Karl for many years dating back to the Admirals Cup days in the 90’s but never sailed with his Beau Geste.

Gavin Brady, who runs the Beau Geste Team, invite me to be the helmsman for two series down here in Oz. Gavin and I sailed together on AmericaOne in the 2000 America’s Cup and again on Money Penny in 2008. It was fun to sail together and the results were there too so that made it even better. There was a great crew, including long time friend and teammate at Oracle and Artemis, David Brooke, who are regulars on Beau Geste and it was a pleasure to race with them as well.

Beau Geste is a TP52 that is optimized for the IRC rule. This means it is slightly different than the Super Series TP52’s I sailed on last summer. The mast is slightly taller and we sailed with 15 crew instead of 12.

We had a mix of conditions from 18 knots and big waves on the first day to seven knots today. Beau Geste dominated the first two days of racing in the stronger winds. Interestingly, one of our competitors was a canting keel 66? designed by Reichel-Pugh name “Alive”. This boat was very tough to beat in todays’ lighter conditions.

Through it all we won the series rather handily. This marked the fourth time in a row that Beau Geste has won the Australian National Championship for IRC racing. They obviously have this figured out so I was just happy to be along for the ride.

I am headed back to San Francisco tomorrow and will sail next in Miami for the Star Western Hemisphere Championship, April 6-9.

Tropical Cyclone Debbie

Tropical Cyclone Debbie has reached Category 2 strength and is forecast to further intensify to Category 4 strength, crossing the Queensland coast on Tuesday between Rollingstone and Proserpine.

Queensland Regional Director Bruce Gunn said this cyclone is very dangerous, and of a size not seen in Queensland since Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi in 2011. ‘Communities between Lucinda and St Lawrence, including Townsville, Bowen and Mackay, may experience gales in the next 24 hours, with the Whitsundays and surrounding coastal islands among the first areas to be impacted,’ he said.

‘Storm surge is also risk factor, and if the cyclone crosses the coast around high tide this will enhance these effects. People living in coastal or low-lying areas prone to flooding should follow the advice of local emergency services and relocate while there is time.’ The Bureau is also warning for abnormally high tides (large waves, storm surge and rough to phenomenal seas.

‘Cyclone Debbie is likely to maintain cyclone strength for some distance inland towards Charters Towers, with damaging to destructive winds, delivering significant rainfall as it tracks to the west-southwest,’ Mr Gunn said.

A Category Four system is defined as one that has sustained winds in the range of 160-200kmh, with gusts up to 280kmh.

Although the strongest winds are near the core, damaging and very destructive winds can extend several hundred kilometres from the cyclone’s centre. Based on current forecasts Townsville may be impacted by Category Three strength winds, with gusts in excess of 165kmh.

Widespread daily rainfall of up to 200mm is expected with the passage of the cyclone, with isolated falls in excess of 400mm possible along the coastal fringe. A Flood Watch is current for coastal catchments between Cardwell and Gladstone extending inland to the eastern Gulf Rivers.

Localised flash flooding is likely, and the public is urged to stay tuned for warnings. Avoid travel when warnings are in effect, exercise caution if caught in a heavy downpour – and never walk, ride or drive through floodwaters.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services are urging the public to:

• Stay tuned for the latest official forecasts and warnings from the Bureau, and follow the advice of local emergency services.
• Discuss your plans for possible relocation with your loved ones so everyone knows where you are going and when you expect to be there.
• Pack an evacuation kit containing clothing, valuables, important documents, medications and sleeping gear in case you need to relocate at short notice.

The Bureau’s Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre in Brisbane operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with forecasters monitoring the situation and providing the latest information for emergency services, media and the community.

Race for Water Odyssey

The festivities begin on Thursday, April 6. The vessel, Race for Water, leaves Lorient on April 9, 2017.

The Race For Water team is busy at the Morbihan harbour of Lorient, making sure that everything is ready for a great party when it is time to cast off.

Three days of festivities are planned in La Base, Lorient, to celebrate the start of the five-year expedition. From April 7-9, Race for Water, will be centre stage as the guest of honour at the L’Orient Nautic, the South Brittany boat show. To mark the occasion, Race for Water will welcome the general public on board on Saturday April 8, with 45-minute guided tours. Four sessions of 25 people each will be organised from 10:00, subject to reservation.

Inside, the public will discover a 100m² exhibition showing the role of the Race for Water Foundation in the preservation of our oceans and the proposed solutions for “waste valorisation”.

There will also be a focus on the scientific work carried out on board and on the renewable energies used for the propulsion and living on this exceptional vessel. Race for Water is powered solely by the sun, wind and water, thanks to its 500m² of solar panels fitted on the upper deck, coupled with a hydrogen production unit and a high-altitude kite.

The combination of these technologies means Race for Water is 100% energy self-sufficient and creates no CO² or fine particle emissions. The exhibition will be seen by the classes of CM1 / CM2 from the school in Sourn in an advance preview on Thursday, April 6, as well as the elected representatives of the Lorient Agglo (Morbihan council) who have been invited on board on Friday, April 7, for the opening ceremony of the L’Orient Nautic, the Bretagne Sud Mini (Southern Brittany Mini), and the launch of the Odyssey.

Finally, the crew of Race for Water will give the press a tour of the boat on Saturday, April 8 at 18:00 (French time). There will be a press conference on Sunday, April 9 at 11:30 at the Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly (the Eric Tabarly sailing centre), followed by lunch and a sail in Lorient bay to witness the first nautical miles of this incredible Odyssey.

Race for Water will then head for the first stop on its voyage, Bermuda, to coincide with the America’s Cup.

Race for Water, 100% self-sufficient with clean energy, will leave its home port of Lorient on a five-year expedition around the globe, with the core mission of preserving the oceans. Bureau Vallée 2

The former Banque Populaire VIII aboard which Armel Le Cléac’h won the last Vendée Globe was put back in the water on Friday in Lorient (Brittany), with her new decoration in the colours of Bureau Vallée.

The first trials and trips to get used to the boat are planned for next week off Lorient to allow the skippers Louis Burton and Servane Escoffier to get to know their new foiler. Bureau Vallée 2 will then be taken to St. Malo, her future home port, where preparations and training will continue for the 2017 Transat Jacques Vabre, with the longer term goal being of course the 2020 Vendée Globe.

After a month and a half in the yard, the IMOCA Bureau Vallée 2 was relaunched at noon today in Lorient by the Bureau Vallée team with the support of the Banque Populaire team. “After some holidays in the mountains, I have finally got back to a normal sleep pattern. Being at altitude and in the snow was tiring for the body and allowed me to reset my biological clock. So I am tackling the preparation phase for my new Bureau Vallée in the best of shape, as she gets back in the water today,” declared Louis Burton, before adding, “I am impressed about how my racing boat has been transformed, as well as by the shape of her hull, the feeling of power she offers and this new look she has been given by the project’s design team and the teams at Bureau Vallée. A lot of marketing work has been done to express the symbols representing my sponsor, while trying to reduce the quantity of paint on her not to add too much extra weight to this fantastic boat.”

A methodical approach to get to know the boat

Louis Burton and his team will be carrying out tests on the boat early next week to find out more about the IMOCA. Then, she will be taken to St. Malo, the new home port for this VPLP-Verdier designed foiler aboard which Armel Le Cléac’h won the eighth Vendée Globe in 74 days. Louis Burton added, “We’ll be spending a lot of time in the coming weeks out on the water with Servane Escoffier. Then, we’ll sail from St. Malo to Horta (Azores) to qualify in June before taking part in the Cowes-Dinard, and then the Fastnet in August. We are also in contact with the teams based in Southern Brittany to see if we can come up with a joint training programme.”

The first big date on the calendar will be the Transat Jacques Vabre, which starts from Le Havre on 5th November and finishes in Salvador da Bahia (Brazil). Alongside Louis Burton, there will be his partner, Servane Escoffier. “The launch is always a symbolic moment. It’s another step forward and we can’t wait now to get out there sailing her and finding out more about the boat,” explained Escoffier. “We really wanted to get her back in the water quickly to spend as much time on her as possible to build up our knowledge of her. With Louis, we’re lucky to have a team and partners, who fully support this project. We have given ourselves some high ambitions, so now it’s time to get out there training.”

The Forest of Dean, Hampshire: A Spectacular Forest Destination

The Forest of Dean is a fascinating region in Britain. It is located amidst the Vale of Leadon, the Wye Valley and the Severn Vale. BVI Spring Regatta

Environmental concerns seem to be getting a lot of press lately. However, the BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival has been involved with protecting the environment for many years.

The regatta has partnered with Sailors for the Sea, a leading conservation organization that ‘engages, educates, inspires and activates the sailing community toward healing the ocean.’ Working together, the BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival has become a leader in the Caribbean and is hailed as one of the most innovative events in the Clean Regatta program. By thinking outside the box, regatta director, Judy Petz has discovered many island-specific sustainability practices that have been implemented to make the BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival an award winning Clean Regatta for the past eight years and counting.

The regatta is honored to have Nanny Cay Resort and Marina hosting our event again this year. Nanny Cay is environmentally conscious and is run with sustainability in mind so they are perfect colleagues to aid the regatta in the quest for protecting the beautiful waters surrounding the British Virgin Islands.

For many years, the skipper’s bags given to all participating yachts have been reusable shopping bags, cold storage bags or dry bags.

BVI Spring Regatta find new ways to keep green

This year, we will be giving heavy-duty canvas boat bags that are perfect for carrying either beach or shopping items. These skipper’s bags will contain lists with green tips and listing the many green initiatives Nanny Cay and the regatta are offering. This year, we are also hoping to focus more on education, pointing out ‘How Long Until Dissolves’ New in 2017, the clothing being sold at the regatta village will be placed in compostable shopping bags since shopping bags can take 10 to 20 years to decompose.

One of the first issues the regatta dealt with was the plastic waste threatening our oceans today. Plastics often do not decompose when they find their way into the ocean. In 2010, Ms. Petz came up with the idea of providing re-usable water bottles to cut down on the number of single use plastic water bottles being used during the regatta. The BVI Marine Association saw the wisdom of this and stepped in to help sponsor these bottles. We added the goal of eliminating single use plastic water bottles one step further and Clear Water, a large water refill company sponsored and offers free water refills all weekend. This year we have eliminated more plastic cups at the regatta bar by using re-usable and compostable drinks glasses. We are also in our third year of using all compostable containers and cutlery at the food vendor booths.

Since the BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival welcomes 3-4,000 people to the village over the course of the weekend, we need a team in place to help with the recycling and clean up. The regatta has partnered with the Filipino Association of the BVI to be our Green Rangers again this year. They understand that the Green Ranger’s objective goes far beyond cleaning up the village; it’s keeping and maintaining our paradise by being more conscientious with what we use and throw out. Recycle, reuse and repurpose.

The Green Rangers will be very visible in the village in their Green shirts sponsored by Seahawk Nautical Coatings.

They are helping us to succeed by carrying out the most important of the best environmental practices: sorting the glass, aluminum cans and the rare plastic for recycling, policing the beach area to keep it free from waste and clean and safe for the enjoyment of all. Association President Dr. Christine Harry says, ‘We are honored to be part of the Green Rangers initiative. It is taking the meaning of ‘cleanup’ to a new level because the effect continues on to years from now, protecting the environment through recycling and using biodegradable materials.’

So, come to the 2017 BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival. See how we can all compete, then party and have fun while enjoying and protecting our surrounding waters that are, as Ms. Petz says, ‘the beautiful playground that we are so privileged to enjoy.’
