Easy security cameras for the sailboat via Arlo

I have been a remote video camera junkie since AXIS came out with their first IP enabled cameras back in the late 1990s. Leveraging an ISDN internet connection, I was able to monitor my house and a vacation property remotely from a computer. Smartphones didn’t exist at that point, so you had to hunt down a computer and a modem or other connection. The video quality of these cameras was, to say the least, quite low. If I remember correctly, that first camera had 120×120 pixels resolution, which is not really enough for anything serious.

Flash forward to now, and we have a ton of different options. I have tried cameras from Nest/Dropcam, Mobotix, Arlo, Ubiquiti, AXIS, Sony, and probably 10 other lesser known manufacturers that I’ve forgotten. So many have restrictions, or are lacking key features, or simply have terrible video quality.

Marine Weather Symposium

A CCA Symposium in February dealing with Marine Weather and related sea state issues will be of great interest to OCC members particularly those in the mid-Atlantic US states.

OCC members are welcome to attend. A great line-up of speakers has been announced. The CCA announcement follows below.

Ocean weather and sea-state affects every aspect of our sport from enjoyment and success to safety. Despite this fact most sailors have little more than a superficial understanding of the governing factors relying almost entirely on broadcast forecasts or advice provided by contract meteorologists or routers. This dependence can lead to difficulties offshore when forecast conditions differ from those actually occurring.

The quality of subsequent routing now becomes much more dependent on the skill of the Master and crew which in turn depends on their understanding of the reasons for the inaccurate forecast and implications regarding future conditions. Even if ready communication is available, limited understanding affects the ability of sailors to ask the right questions of their consultants and to confidently put the information received to use.

To assist mariners in the development of a fundamental understanding of marine weather and the associated forecasts and sea state CCA will on February 10, 2018 host a one day symposium at the MITAGS Conference Center in Linthicum Heights, Maryland next to the Baltimore Washington Airport. The session will start at 0830 est and wind up around 1730. Rooms will be available at this site for those needing overnight accommodations. Subjects to be covered and presenters include:

  • Marine Weather Fundamentals, mid-latitude, tropical, extratropical conditions (Ken McKinley, Locust Weather);
  • 500 mb conditions –significance and analysis (Lee Chesneau – Chesneau Marine Weather)
  • Ocean currents, waves, and sea state (Frank Bohlen, University of Connecticut Marine Sciences)
  • Forecasts and forecasting (Joseph Sienkiewicz– NWS OPC, Ken Campbell – Commanders Weather)
  • Communications VHF to Inmarsat (Jim Corenman)
  • The Role of the Navigator – Information processing and routing (Stan Honey, Ralph Naranjo)
  • Questions from floor – Roundtable Discussion (With all presenters)

2017 Records
Broken. Smashed. Shattered. That’s what happened to several records in 2017, a memorable year for our clients and for North 3Di. In January, Armel Le Cleác’h sailed around the world solo in 74 days, 3 hours, 35 minutes and 46 seconds, breaking the solo (monohull) round-the-world record. During the summer, records were falling so fast we had a hard time keeping up: Round the Island, Transpac, Transatlantic (twice!). We’re guessing that Thomas Coville holds the record for the most sailing
records broken in a single year.In December, Christmas came early for Francois Gabart when he and his MACIF took the outright solo around-the-world record by lapping the planet in 42 days, 16 hours, 40 minutes and 35 seconds. The final record of 2017 goes to LDV Comanche, who set the pace for future Rolex
Sydney – Hobart Races (1 day, 9 hours, 15 minutes and 24 seconds).

And with that, we raise a toast to our clients who push the limits and to the products that help make all this record smashing possible. Here’s to 2018!

Memorable moments | Saying goodbye to an incredible year of cruising

Crouching at the water’s edge, I picked up a smooth black stone and gripped it in my palm. Magnus stood next to me — clad in his wetsuit with boogie board in hand — and I talked him through his latest attempt at setting out into the cold water of Alaska’s Prince William Sound. Then he went for it and I smiled watching him splash his way into the clear blue water before launching the rock far beyond him.

Later, sitting next to a fire and fresh caught salmon roasting over hot coals, I thought aloud to Jill while watching Yahtzee bob just offshore: “Does life get any better than this? I don’t think it does.”

In many ways, that’s how 2017 went. By any and every measure we can think of, it was an amazing year of cruising aboard Yahtzee. Here are a few of our most memorable moments:

Fish On!

For all the years that we’ve lived and cruised aboard Yahtzee, we never really began seriously fishing and crabbing until this summer. And boy has it changed how we eat. We finally bought a crab trap in Ketchikan and after a week or so of empty pots, we got it down and started hitting the jackpot. We also fished more than ever and caught a smattering of delicious fish including salmon, ling cod and rock fish. Hopefully halibut is next.

Experiencing Haida Gwaii

When departing the San Juan Islands to head up the west coast of Vancouver Island in March, we had Haida Gwaii on our list of places we’d like to visit but weren’t sure we’d make it to this somewhat off-the-beaten-path cruising destination. After spending a week there, we were very glad we made it.

Making landfall at Anthony Island, or SGang Gwaay, on the southern tip of the archipelago after a 160-mile passage from the top of Vancouver Island, we were truly in awe of our surroundings. The inescapable wildness of the place, coupled with the fact that we saw no other vessels for days, truly made Haida Gwaii special. If you have a chance to get here by boat, we say go!

No more diapers! 

Magnus’ potty was the perfect teaching tool — no matter where it went.

Ok, this one seems really obvious. But getting Magnus out of diapers at 2-years-old meant no longer carrying these stink-bombs around until we could get rid of our garbage — which, in some instances, wasn’t for as long as two weeks. Yikes!

Hello Ocean

Yahtzee sails toward the sunset in the Gulf of Alaska.

I touched on this in an earlier post, but our time sailing on the Pacific Ocean up the west coast of Vancouver Island and then 500 miles across the Gulf of Alaska in early July was our favorite experience of the summer. We love the freedom of ocean sailing, the challenge of being self-sufficient in a vast wilderness, and even the hardships that can come with less sleep and sometimes boisterous sea conditions. It’s all part of it, and we look forward to making longer ocean passages in the future.

One of the things we’ve enjoyed most about living and cruising aboard Yahtzee over the years has been our ability to share it with friends and family — and 2017 was no different. Hosting Jill’s mom for three weeks in Southeast Alaska, her brother and his girlfriend for a long weekend in Sitka, and my dad for a week in Prince William Sound were all very memorable parts of year. It’s wonderful for them to not only see where and how we live, but also to spend time with the boys in their own environment. That, in and of itself, is priceless.

Alaska, Alaska, Alaska

It’s said that naturalist John Muir wrote in his journal, “You should never go to Alaska as a young man because you’ll never be satisfied with any other place as long as you live.” Well, John might be right, Alaska is extraordinary.

Sure, Alaska is Jill’s home state, so she gets it more than most, but from the moment we entered “The Great Land”, it was love all over again. So much so, that we’re still here. Whether it was our amazing time in Glacier Bay, exploring Lynn Canal,  falling for Sitka, discovering the stunning Kenai Peninsula, or looping through breathtaking Prince Williams Sound, we sure did cover some magnificent miles through this huge state.

Of course, throughout it all, we did have some tough days, too, and some big life decisions to make. And as the year winds to a close, we can’t wait to experience even more of this awe-inspiring place in 2018 and then we’ll see where the winds of change blow us from here.

Sydney Hobart

This 2017 Rolex Sydney Hobart may have been a spectacularly fast one for the quick yachts at the front of the fleet, but there is still a long way to go for the rest of the fleet – at dawn this morning, three were struggling up a completely windless Derwent River while the remaining 63 competing yachts were strung along the Tasmanian coast.

The tailenders have only just left Bass Strait in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s 73rd running of the 628 nautical mile race. Line Honours may have at last been decided, and no doubt the crew of Ichi Ban is somewhere in Hobart celebrating their overall win, to be officially recognised in the presentation of the Tattersall Cup at the Race Village in Hobart today.

The winners of every division and ORCi are nailed down. Only the PHS and Clipper divisions remain up for grabs. But you can guarantee that for a multitude of little races within the race, it is definitely still game on. The British and Australian Invictus yachts have not finished glaring at each other across the waves, nor have the Clipper round the world boats, and the year’s bragging rights for dozens of club rivals, who have waged friendly battle around the cans every weekend since the year dot, remain in the balance.

The great news for all these boats is that, while there was a mild southerly change yesterday, except for the guys wallowing in the Derwent, they will be back in a moderate easterly, then nor-easterly breeze as today wears on. There is no sign any of them will get hammered by the traditional southerly front that so often is the lot of the backmarkers.

For a lot of these boats, the overnight work into a modest southerly will have come as a relief. The old IOR rating boats especially are in their element upwind, but very difficult to drive with the breeze over the helmsman’s shoulder. The unkind sometimes refer to them as pigs. When they do get to Hobart, the bars will no doubt be echoing with tales of broaches and out of control and torn spinnakers.

Yet the attrition rate has been exceptionally low in 2017. The number of retirements remains at just five, with Opt2Go Scamp still very much in the race, sailing 40 miles south of Flinders Island after putting into Eden yesterday for running repairs.

It is always a robust topic for speculation at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in Sydney, prior to the race: ‘Will any of the stragglers miss the New Year fireworks off Constitution Dock?’ Alas, it is not looking good for Gun Runner, Charlie’s Dream, and Euphoria II, and very tight for Freyja, Opt2Go Scamp and Chancellor. Fortunately they are all heavy enough yachts to carry an emergency supply of champagne.

In the midst of Seattle winter, I find myself often turning to photography from past cruises as a brief consolation. It’s tough to get out much in the winter (it gets dark at 4pm!), and some of the winter blues are relieved by reminiscing over photos from sunnier times in the San Juans, Desolation Sound, Barkley Sound, and other places our travels have taken us.

Photography is a long-time hobby of mine, and I feel photos really do tell a thousand words as they say. So I’ll keep this short and sweet and highlight some of my favorites from the past three years:

Pantaenius Pittwater to Coffs Coast Yacht Race

Southport Yacht Club’s Auric’s Quest will be a hot contender for back to back wins in the 2018 Bartercard Sail Paradise Regatta, along with a solid chance to be named champion of the Pittwater to Paradise Series, 2018.

Due to mechanical issues Auric’s Quest was unable to join the east coast offshore race, however fortunate enough to compete in home regatta Bartercard Sail Paradise in 2017. Being the vessels first major event, Auric’s Quest competed against a premier fleet to be crowned regatta champion.

“I am extremely pleased that this event will be an annual occasion to look forward to. Last year was an opportunity that we unfortunately could not attend, however for 2018 the boat is back on track and the crew are more prepared than ever,” said skipper Fred Bestall.

While the main focus for entrants is the series championship crown, the four-day offshore event is also host to the 2018 Queensland Australian Yachting Championships, Australian Measurement System Queensland Championships and Australia Sports Boat Queensland Championships.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Southport Yacht Club to showcase the Gold Coasts perfect sailing conditions as well as the Club’s race management professionalism and onshore entertainment,” SYC Commodore Kerry Noyes adds.

Auric’s Quest is currently in Pittwater with the crew well underway with preparations for the 2018 Club Marine Pittwater to Paradise ocean race, following with Bartercard Sail Paradise.

“Our eclectic crew will be well warmed up by the time we reach Southport to compete in our home Club’s wonderful sailing regatta” adds Fred.

With over 60 vessels entered in the series, numerous entrants include from New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and as far as New Zealand.

A first for the regatta is the ‘Club Trophy’, to be eligible a Club must have three competitors nominated within the IRC division, contestants to watch include Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and Southport Yacht Club.

Held from Saturday 6th to Tuesday 9th January 2018, the four-day regatta will be staged off shore the beautiful Gold Coast beaches.

Bartercard Sail Paradise will follow the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club‘s 2018 Pittwater to Southport Yacht Race commencing on January 2nd, with the vessels crossing the finish off the Main Beach shoreline.

It will be an amazing sight in January, giving the community the opportunity to watch the competing yachts within close proximity of the Gold Coast beaches.

Southport Yacht Club will host an open house day on Sunday 7th January, with a public invitation to view the yachts on the Club’s 300 berth private marina.
