Three Sheets is racing to Alaska!

The infamous Race to Alaska (R2AK) was created and first run in 2015. Since the moment I heard about it, I have wanted to join in the fun and insanity of racing 750 unsupported miles from Port Townsend, Washington to Ketchikan, Alaska with a crack at ten grand or a set of steak knives — and Three Sheets has wanted to be apart of more than just covering it with updates.

Well, here we go.

I am excited to announce that I will finally be getting my chance at the race and Three Sheets readers will be along for the ride. I’ll be sailing and pedaling aboard Team Wild Card alongside friends Mike Descheemaeker, Robert Robinson and Three Sheets contributor and R2AK tracker junkie, Mark Aberle.

Our R2AK ride before work commenced.

The four of us have thousands of combined miles cruising and racing up the Inside Passage and beyond, and we’re eager to throw our collective talents at this unique race and its incredible course.

Though the gun for the 2018 Race to Alaska goes off in Port Townsend on June 14, we’ve got a lot to do before that. Our new-to-us whip is a 1970-something Santa Cruz 27 that we bought off CraigsList (yes, you read that right). It’s currently far away from the water in a barn on Mike’s property in Skykomish where it is being continuously tweaked for the race. Stay tuned for updates.

Mike makes room for our R2AK racer.

Team Wild Card’s Race to Alaska is in its infancy, but you can follow along here on TSNW, join our Facebook page and, of course, find out everything race-related at R2AK.com.
