CWB 3rd Friday Speaker: Setting the World’s Outboard Speed Record in a Northwest Wooden Boat

For more than four decades, each month CWB has presented a speaker of wit and experience to talk about his or her special knowledge. It is also an opportunity for CWB members to meet one another and the staff. The program is held in the Boathouse Gallery. It runs from 7pm to 9pm and includes a question-and-answer session. Light refreshments are available (donations to cover costs are appreciated). November’s 3rd Friday presentation will be held on November 17th.

How fast can you go in an outboard wooden boat?

The Center for Wooden Boats’ November 3rd Friday presenter, Bob Wartinger, knows.  He has gone faster in an outboard boat than anyone else in the world.

Bob, a Seattle native, is the driver and current holder of the Outboard World’s Straightaway Record at 176.556 mph.  He will share what it takes to drive a 20-foot wooden hydroplane – designed and built in Seattle – into the record book.

In a racing career that spans more than 50 years, Bob has competed in just about every type of boat, class, and category in the boat racing world.  He has won numerous World Championships and National Championships, and other awards, but when it comes to records, Bob has no equal.

Bob has well over 130 boat racing speed records to his credit, but his World’s Outboard Speed Record is the pinnacle of outboard racing.  He will tell us the story of how it was done.
