It’s almost time for the Wooden Boat Festival!

The Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend is easily one of my favorite boating events, and is something I look forward to every year. Why? This opening line from the event website sums it up perfectly:

Over 300 boats on land and water, 120 presentations, dozens of exhibitors, live music all day every day, interactive exhibits for kids, and plenty of local food, beer, and wine options to satisfy everyone.

That’s right, there’s a lot to love about this annual gathering of boat nuts, which sets sail from September 8-10.

Every year boating enthusiasts from around the Pacific Northwest, North America and the world descend on Point Hudson marina to talk boats, look at boats, learn about boats and everything in between. You can go on boat rides, watch demonstrations, enjoy presentations, eat good food, drink great beer, dance to lively music and more. But all the boats and boat-related fun is just part of the experience. As one of our contributors rightly observed at last year’s fest, it’s also the people that make the Wooden Boat Festival unique. From Lin Pardey and Matt Rutherford to old salts and regular sailor folks, the crew of people presenting and attending is always fun to be a part of.

This year I’ll be presenting a session called “Living the Dream: How to get your boating stories published” on Saturday morning September 9 at 9:30 on the Adventure Stage. In this informational seminar, I’ll delve into the background of how I became a maritime writer and editor and then will offer tips and guidance for how aspiring writers can get their work published. Topics will include realities of the industry, what magazine editors are looking for, everyday steps to achieving the larger goal of publishing, creating polished content, turning your passion into stories, pitching your ideas and what to expect while going through the submission process.

See a full schedule of events and presentations here. And purchase tickets and find out more show info here. Hope to see you there!
