But not the Wilcox family.
Parents Chuck and Dawn and their children, 13-year-old Garth and Linda, 10, set out from San Francisco in 1973 with a dream of sailing around the world on their 40-foot Maine Pinky sailboat, Vela. The fantasy runs hard aground just 13 months into the voyage when they shipwreck on a coral reef in Fiji, tearing a hole in the boat large enough to drive a car through.
Many sailors would have cut their losses and abandoned the voyage, but not the plucky Wilcoxes, as Bainbridge Island author Wendy Hinman recounts in her absorbing new book, “Sea Trials: Around the World with Duct Tape and Bailing Wire.”
In the days after the shipwreck, the Wilcoxes sell many critical pieces of gear from the boat — its radio, inflatable and hard dinghies, generator and electrical equipment, even the cushions — after being told the boat could not be salvaged. But after finding no buyers for the wrecked yacht, they decide to repair Vela and continue their circumnavigation, a grueling project that takes almost a year. That fateful decision would be questioned numerous times over the next four years as the family is beset with almost constant problems, from an engine that rarely works to a damaged rig, an ongoing cockroach infestation and an ever-tightening budget.

Hinman is married to Garth Wilcox, and readers of her 2012 book, “Tightwads on the Loose: A Seven Year Pacific Odyssey,” about the couple’s 34,000-mile voyage from Seattle to Japan and back, got a glimpse into what dauntless and resourceful explorers they are. “Sea Trials” shows the roots of that intrepidness in Wilcox, now a senior naval architect for Seattle firm Glosten. Just 14 years old when the family shipwrecked, the young Garth played a major role in the ship’s rebuild and stepped in as captain when his father reached his emotional limits.
Hinman brings the same meticulous research and attention to detail in her first book to “Sea Trials,” engagingly drawing readers into the daily trials and family dynamics that shaped the Wilcoxes’ taxing journey. The voyage was extraordinary for its time, relying on celestial navigation and taking them to places few tourists then visited — Sudan, Tonga, the Suez Canal shortly after its 1975 reopening — in an era when little information about long-distance cruising was available.
And while some of the family’s problems can be chalked up to poor decisions and a lack of resources — making a passage to Australia without storm sails, for example — they were also voyaging in a time before GPS, electronic navigation, cell phones and the myriad conveniences 21st century cruisers take for granted.
“Sea Trials” is a perfect accompaniment to summer cruising. Boaters will sympathize with the Wilcoxes as they deal with yet another equipment failure and cheer them on when they finally get to enjoy a rare bit of worry-free sightseeing in foreign countries. They’ll marvel at the family’s fortitude — and be thankful to be cruising in a vastly different time.

Global Eagle Entertainment Inc announced new luxury connectivity brand PRIVA by Global Eagle last week, replacing its legacy MTN brand which focused solely on yacht connectivity.
Discussing the change, Jeffrey Leddy, Global Eagle CEO said: “Global Eagle is… expanding our capabilities to allow ultra-high net worth individuals to benefit from the company’s extensive businesses in aviation and on land.”
But how new is this exactly, and will the change truly benefit customers? In our April edition, we published a letter from an ETO who explained how a previous incarnation of MTN had a specialised yacht support team, but that new owners at the time had disbanded it, deciding to just have one support team for all industries. As a result of this, the feedback from ETOs was that sometimes its workers were unable to deal with superyacht-specific issues. The specialised yacht team had been re-instated when our April edition went to press, and our ETO X was optimistic that things were heading in the right direction.
Ole-Kristian Sivertsen, senior vice president of maritime at Global Eagle, explained in an interview earlier this year that this new PRIVA rebrand and diversification came about from client demand. “We have had clients with private jets and yachts asking us for a seamless connectivity experience across both,” he says. “It is more economic and efficient for these clients to buy a pool of bandwidth and use it across all their assets – whether that be on land, at sea or in the air.”
So instead of just offering a dedicated yacht service, PRIVA now aims to serve clients across a host of assets, for example on land at a private villa, at sea on a superyacht, and in the air on a private jet. Whilst the UHNI market could obviously benefit from a family-office-style service, only time will tell whether in requiring support workers to know about villas, yachts and jets, users might see a dilution in the quality of each specific service.
However, it has been announced that PRIVA will offer a new 24/7 “VVIP” customer service program, whereby technicians and support teams will be available anytime from PRIVA Technical Concierge centres in Miramar, Florida and Madrid, Spain. We hope this will go some way towards maintaining good support levels and quick solution times in the wake of this change. We also hope this service won’t be charged at additional VVIP pricing.

The Research Explorer Vessel (REV) has been commissioned by Norwegian industrialist Kjell Inge Røkke, for the key purpose of housing scientists for far-reaching expeditions to map and survey the ocean’s marine life. Røkke hopes that this will lead to discovery of new solutions for preserving the world’s seas, and is working in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Norway.
The REV will be fitted with sustainable energy solutions where possible, including a slim hull line and efficient wave-cutting bulb to help reduce fuel usage from the medium-speed engines. An energy recovery rudder system and battery package with an exhaust cleaning system will feature below the water-line. She is being designed and built by commercial shipbuilder, VARD, a company belonging to the Fincantieri Group, and should be ready to launch in 2020.
However, Owner Kjell Inge Røkke explained that the boat will be able to be used by luxury guests as well as scientists. “The ship will be offered as an arena for scientists and explorers from all over the world. The vessel will be built to the highest standard making it suitable for charter to private individuals, companies and institutions, which will generate research funding, and my family and I will also charter and use the ship as a place for recreation and inspiration,” he said.
Two 2,400 eKw Caterpillar engines will drive the REV to a top speed of 17 knots and at half load, she will be able to cruise non-stop for 21,120 nautical miles. When used for research, she can carry up to 60 scientists and 40 crew members, whilst on luxury trips the vessel is designed to host up to 36 guests together with a company of 54 crew members.
